| Abstract | The rainfall in the month of March (the first month of the Northeast Brazil rainfall season) of the year 2000 registered below normal precipitation contradicting the notion that La Niña conditions favor normal or above normal precipitation in the semiarid regions of Northeast Brazil. The forecast from the CPTEC climate model with the February conditions was the best forecast among many, all of them were very far from the reality. The intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) stayed mostly near the Pará and western Maranhão coast during the month. Only in the last pentad of the month the ITCZ moved to near the Ceará coast. The South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) was well defined over the Southeast and west-central regions of Brazil during the middle three pentads of the month causing subsidence over Northeast Brazil. The reasons for these anomalies are to be investigated. |
